How this paycheck calculator finds your take-home pay
Take-home pay is your gross salary minus pre-tax deductions, federal income tax, and FICA — Social Security and Medicare. This paycheck calculator applies the 2025 figures (6.2% Social Security up to the $176,100 wage base and 1.45% Medicare on all wages), then divides your net pay by your pay schedule to show what actually lands in each check, whether you're paid weekly, bi-weekly, semi-monthly, or monthly.
Gross pay vs. net pay — and how to change it
Gross pay is the salary on your offer letter; net pay is what hits your bank account after taxes and deductions. The gap surprises a lot of people. Contributing to a traditional 401(k) or pre-tax benefits lowers your taxable wages, so your take-home drops by less than the amount you set aside.
Adjust the numbers above to see how a raise, a new pay frequency, or a bigger retirement contribution changes your take-home pay. (This is a federal and FICA estimate; state and local income taxes vary and aren't included.)

Frequently asked questions
How is take-home pay calculated?
Start with gross pay, subtract pre-tax deductions (like 401(k)), then federal income tax, Social Security (6.2% up to the wage base) and Medicare (1.45%, plus 0.9% above high-income thresholds). What's left is your take-home.
Does this include state taxes?
This is a federal + FICA estimate. State and local income taxes vary widely and aren't included here.
How much of my paycheck goes to Social Security and Medicare?
For 2025, employees pay 6.2% Social Security on wages up to $176,100 and 1.45% Medicare on all wages, with an extra 0.9% Medicare above $200k (single) / $250k (married filing jointly).
How does my 401(k) affect take-home pay?
Traditional 401(k) contributions come out before income tax, lowering your taxable wages (and income tax) — so your take-home drops by less than the amount you contribute.
