How to calculate sales tax by state

To find sales tax, multiply the pre-tax price by the combined sales tax rate — the state base rate plus any local (county and city) rate. Pick your state above to load the 2025 base rate, add your local rate from a recent receipt, and the calculator instantly shows the sales tax and the total you'll pay.

Rates range widely: California has the highest state base at 7.25%, while five states charge no statewide sales tax at all. Local add-ons can push the combined rate well above the base.

State vs. local sales tax rates

The rate on your receipt is almost always a combined rate. States set a base rate, then counties, cities and special districts layer their own on top — which is why two towns in the same state can charge different amounts. A few states also work differently: New Mexico and Hawaii use gross receipts or general excise taxes rather than a traditional retail sales tax.

If you're a firm managing sales-tax filings across clients and states, UpTax keeps the details straight so nothing slips through the cracks, with a professional reviewing the return.

Frequently asked questions

How is sales tax calculated?

Sales tax is the purchase amount multiplied by the combined rate — your state's base rate plus any county and city (local) rates. This calculator applies the 2025 state base rate and lets you add your local rate for an exact figure.

Which states have no sales tax?

Five states have no statewide general sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon. Alaska allows local sales taxes, so some Alaskan cities still charge one.

Why is the tax on my receipt higher than the state rate?

Most cities and counties add a local sales tax on top of the state rate, so your combined rate can be a percentage point or two higher. Enter that local rate above to match your receipt exactly.

Do these rates include local (ZIP-level) taxes?

The dropdown shows each state's base rate. Because local rates vary by ZIP, add yours in the local-rate field. For a whole client base, UpTax handles sales-tax details as part of preparation.
